Lactoferrin is a naturally occurring bioactive protein found in the human body and in mammalian milk, especially in colostrum (the first milk). It belongs to the transferrin family and is best known for its ability to bind iron very strongly. That single property helps explain why lactoferrin attracts so much scientific attention across several areas at once: immune defence, mucosal barrier support, the gut environment and iron homeostasis.
